Thinking like a ridge

Behind the botanical folio sat a book she had treated as furniture. A Sand County Almanac. Aldo Leopold. He learned, watching a wolf die, that the mountain keeps longer books than the rifle. Earlier: The way does not hurry the fescue

Before the Maiden takes the tray

Four reels and a parlor assignment. Button still growing into the desk. Belle on the hem. Scoop left the flash in the drawer. Inkhorn took the notebook a wedding will not schedule. Professor Gruff stayed in the manger: write the glasses on the tray, not the girl who learned to time-jump. Leave the rails off the page. Back before the light goes mean.

The Maiden funds the hill. The paper tells the county what the hill may say. Do not get those jobs confused.

From the editor’s manger

Dear readers, kids, and the teal hunter who asked whether a goat counts as a decoy: No. A goat is not a decoy. A goat is a critic. If you set us in a blind we will eat the camo and file a review.

The calendar has remembered that September is a hinge. Teal opened Saturday. Archery opened Tuesday. Dixon raffles a cow. Perryville still has sequins on the horizon. Jefferson City can expire stationery. A spring does not read stationery.
