A summons on the calendar

WEST PLAINS, Mo. — The Quill printed the charge on August 19. This paper printed the loss the week after. Today we print only the date that is still ahead.

September 28, 2026. Associate 37th Circuit. Judge R. David Ray. Logan A. Davis, twenty, rural Willow Springs, summoned on one felony count of first-degree property damage. That is the whole of what a responsible sheet may say before a courtroom says anything else.

The investigation, as the public paper told it, started June 7 on Forest Service land off Private Road 5371. A federal grazing permit. Hired care. Electric fence down. Two nannies and four kids dead in a way a deputy read as tire tracks. A barbed-wire line that had been whole on June 5. The owner thought June 6. Howell County is prosecuting.

Nanny Belle does not invent dialogue for the dead. She does not invent a motive for the living. She invents only the newsroom rule Professor Gruff nailed above the tea tin:

A charge is a door. A verdict is a room. Do not decorate the hallway and call it a house. Six goats is already enough sentence for one page.

Dolly and Charlotte went as far as the county line in last month’s hop and came home with no extra kids in the caboose. Some rescues are not ours to make. Some are a sheriff’s report and a grazing permit and a person who had to walk a pasture that should have been noisy.

We will be on the calendar September 28 the way a good neighbor is on a porch: present, quiet, unwilling to guess the end of a story that has not ended.

Until then the ledger holds six names we were never given and one court date we were.
